64Gb Itouch Pricey But Versatile
Aug 5th
I had never owned an Apple Product before buying this 64GB iTouch. I don’t need internet on my phone (nor the data charges) but I wanted to have smartphone features like calendar, contacts, applications, music, photos, etc. Since I have never owned another Apple product, I won’t waste time comparing and contrasting this with previous generations of this 64Gb iTouch. I must say, I have been impressed. The screen is simply stunning and the operating system is a breeze to pick up. The apps available for this are simply endless. There are games, true utilities, notepads, etc., the sky is really the limit. It even syncs with my outlook calendar and contacts that I use at work. Itunes is clunky and slow, but tolerable. The wireless connection connected to my router without a hitch, and I enjoy surfing the web on my couch while my wife uses the computer. I can download news apps like AP Mobile and Reuters for free, and update them on my way to work to read later when I don’t have a wireless connection. One utility that I bought for $4.00 will sync and cache with google’s reader application to download and cache hundreds of articles in nearly any subject. (news, movies, games, etc). All in all, I have been very pleased with the functions and utilties of this 64Gb iTouch. If you want Iphone abilities but don’t need the voice or data plan, 64Gb iTouch is a great alternative.
64GB iTouch – Better Than My Old Axim X50v In Terms Of Portability And Speed
I am happy so far with the 64Gb iTouch “3rd” generation in terms of 1) its small size that allows me to carry it in my shirt pocket; 2) bright, clear resolution; and 3) sufficient processing speed for add-on medical applications and word processing. The 64GB iTouch has become my PDA of choice (after the installation of Documents to Go software for $10 for word processing and PC desktop synchronization). For me, it was a better choice than the HP Ipaq 211 in terms of lower price and easier portability vs larger screen size. The possibility of playing games and listening to MP3 music on the 64GB iTouch is also intriguing.

64Gb iTouch – A Very “Cool” Device, So Many Functions
This 64Gb iTouch is functional in every way you look at it. I’m not a Apple-freak but i got to admit that this 64Gb iTouch is one of the very best Multimedia Player on the market. To make it simple, Things to love: 1. WiFi/Internet access: You can chat, Internet surf, Facebook, google maps, an so on. 2. Quality sound. 3. A lot of apps. 4. Very fast and intuitive. Things I would like on next generations: 1. A-GPS please!!! 2. Front-camera to use with some live chat / video call apps (Skype for example) I love 64GB iTouch, it fills my requirements.

mLearning Is the New Custom eLearning
Jul 28th
Custom e-learning revolutionized the way schools and employers teach. Students, employees, and other adult learners enjoy the freedom and flexibility associated with custom e-learning environments. Employers have particularly picked up custom e-learning as a means of affordably training many employees over a period of time, without the expense of training seminars. Now, employers can help employees train anywhere, at any time with mobile, or m-learning.
Of course, learners also love the flexibility m-learning provides. Now students can take custom e-learning courses right from laptops, iPhones, Blackberries, tablet PCs, and iPads, meaning they can take it with them. Imagine attending class or training under a favorite tree in a favorite park, instead of being cooped up in a stuffy classroom or board room.
There are some challenges in creating custom e-learning content for m-learning applications. eLearning professionals must keep the limitations of screen size and keyboard accessibility in mind when creating new or reworking custom e-learning courses for mobile applications. The navigation of quality m-learning materials must be simple, and screens must not be overly packed with content. Visibility and the ability to run the software are both major considerations when integrating teaching tools such as graphics and animations for m-learning.
Though the availability and capabilities of devices are hurdles for creating m-learning content, the applications for m-learning are seemingly endless. As m-learning is defined as any learning that takes place via a portable electronic device, everything from videos to documents, to multimedia texting can be used as m-learning applications. Many existing applications for smartphones and iPads constitute m-learning materials, even though the users might use them for hobbies. For example, an application designed to run on Apple products that helps the user identify plants and offers care instructions is actually an m-learning teaching tool, though most users may not think about the fact that they are really learning. These kinds of m-learning applications have helped to make more people into active learners, the effects of which are yet to be measurable.
Many e-learning professionals can turn existing custom e-learning packages into m-learning modules. Of course, they can also create all new custom m-learning materials as well. In many education settings, the standardized use of m-learning is often unrealistic as not all students might be able to access materials on mobile devices. Custom e-learning mobile learning modules do work very well in professional environments where most employees already have smartphones, and the company is able to supply workers with portable devices if necessary.
Supplying employees with custom m-learning materials is an efficient way of providing said employees with information on the go. Doctors and other medical associates have used m-learning materials on handheld devices for years to aid in diagnosis and treatment selection. mLearning materials also create a fairly constant link between the employee and the workplace, especially when multimedia texting is integrated in the custom m-learning package. As portable device technology improves, the use of custom e-learning for business training will become increasingly prevalent in m-learning formats.

HTC fastest in July to enter the mainland or to the operation of dual-branded smart phone magnates in China
May 24 news sources revealed to ZDNet, “If all goes well, the earliest on July 16, Acer Aspire 3000 Battery HTC (HTC) will formally enter the mainland market to take over the Dopod and channels in the domestic market, taking over after the HTC and is likely to double brand Dopod operation, HTC more into the retail channel, Dopod operator specializing in custom. ”
This means that HTC will be formally Huijun mainland market, the domestic smart phone market, with Nokia and Motorola are the direct exchange of fire.
Headquartered in China Taiwan’s HTC is the world’s fourth largest manufacturer of smart phones, the main production using Microsoft Window Mobile and Google Android smart phone system. IDC report released in February this year showed that the year 2009, HTC to 8.1 million of sales-leading Motorola and Samsung, followed by Nokia, RIM and Apple in the global smartphone vendor in the fourth.
HTC smart phone is only in recent years, production of the global brand awareness is also rising.
U.S. wireless communications and professional media Fierce Wireless announced in November last year, the nation’s most influential list of 25 mobile communications leader, first appearance of HTC CEO Peter Chou on the sixth, Apple CEO Steve Jobs was ranked second.
Join forces with Google to create the Nexus One once attracted the attention of fans around the world cell phone craze. In February of this year, HTC launched last year, Hero also won the GSM Association of mobile phone awarded “Best Mobile Awards 2009.”
Although the gains in overseas markets quite frequently, but HTC partners in Compaq Presario R3000 Battery the domestic market performance Dopod did not achieve the same breakthrough. Dopod mobile phone unit is also easily make four or five thousand dollars, the average consumer more like HTC turned to cheaper parallel imports market.
Early May, the network rumored HTC Chinese companies have completed registration, Dopod Dopod brand has been suspended inside the market promotion, started to enter the mainland to make way for the HTC.
Blau, then the HTC and Dopod confirmation, both sides said they would not respond to any rumors. HTC and Dopod common, said: “Whether the marketing strategy and product innovation, the Dopod and HTC has always been a close strategic partnership. HTC’s innovative R & D to provide good products of their ability, in technology, product research and development together to help Dopod consumers in line with China’s smart phone market trend products, and again to deepen bilateral cooperation. ”
Denied the rumors behind, and shows that HTC is still fixed on the domestic growth of 3G smart phone market.
ISupply market research agency in February this year, figures released show that China’s 3G mobile phone sales in 2009 only 7.2 million, but shot high in the three major cell phone carriers subsidize the policy stimulus, by 2010 China 3G mobile phone market is expected to increase over last year five times, surged to 42.97 million. Development and Reform Commission Ministry of Industry and the Ministry in April 8, also said in 2011, the domestic 3G network will cover all the country above the prefectural level cities and most counties, towns, major highways and scenic areas, etc., 3G subscribers will reach 150 million.
However, the current market the majority of sales are still non-3G mobile smart phones. Motorola Co-CEO and mobile devices division CEO Sanjay @ Jia (Sanjay Jha) Jan. 10 interview in Beijing, says that mobile phone shipments in the domestic market only about 15% of smart phones, and in the United States, the proportion of 40-50%.
“Indeed, the domestic market last year, mobile phone sales exceed 200 million, among which the majority are non-smart phones. Operators also hope that through the promotion of ‘thousand 3G phone’ to pull the entire market, this being the proportion of non-smart phones not small. However, in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Zhejiang provinces and cities of these economic development, 3G smart phone sales are not low, accounting for 25% of all mobile phone sales. “Dopod COO Xu Weide said on ZDNet.
“China smart phone market is still growing rapidly, and third party data showed the domestic 3G smartphone in 2010 the market size will more than 6 million. In addition to the models already on sale to the end of the year, Dopod will launch another four in the country TD models smart phones and dual-mode smart phones a CDMA2000. ”

Video Game Designer And Other Hot Jobs For 2010 And Beyond
Jul 13th
Many kids today spend thousands of hours playing video games. Progressing from GameBoys(TM), to GameCubes(TM), Wii(TM) and XBox(TM), to the final frontier of the Massive Multiplayer Online games, it looks to have taken over their life. Is there a way to capitalize on this obsession and find a career that is equally (or at least almost) as appealing? Take up the quest and discover a brave new world of future jobs that video game geeks might really love.Video Game DesignerFirst and foremost, of course, is the job of creating video games themselves. The facts are these: the video game industry has surpassed movies in terms of the dollar value generated. Amazing! Not only is this industry continuing to expand, but it also appears to be relatively recession proof. What does it take to have a career in video game creation? First, you need to understand that there is not just one kind of video game job out there, but many. It takes a team of people with multiple talents to pull off the creation of an exciting new game. The jobs and skills involved include artists – storyboard artist, character artist, animator, texture artists, programmers, including sound and audio engineers, game designers – character design, level design, overall design, game producers – project management skills, and writers – software documentation, storytelling, character scripts. There has been a recent explosion in colleges, technical institutes and certificate programs to help you get the skills you need to get into this industry. While I was researching this industry, though, I found out that there are a lot of other up and coming careers that use a lot of the same skills and may be equally appealing. Simulation EngineerJust as the job of the video game designer and programmer is to make a convincing virtual world, there is a “real life” application of this for a number of industries- simulations. At one college they talked about how some students were using electrical impulses from the heart to render 3 dimensional images of the heart in real time to help doctors examine what could be wrong. At RPI they are working on creating a simulation of a surgical procedure for doctors to get practice before they cut someone open! Beyond medical applications, simulations are gaining ground in aerospace, automotive engineering, and many other industries. Of course, the military has been interested in simulation for a very long time. Some of the college video game degree programs are recognizing this trend and have added “simulation” into the title of their program (for example, Daniel Webster Colleges’ “Gaming, Simulation and Robotics” BS degree or the University of Baltimore’s “Simulation and Digital Entertainment” degree). Scientists, engineers, defense planners and educators all use simulation to facilitate their jobs.Mobile Application DeveloperAnother huge career trend is the explosion of applications for all kinds of other devices. Just look at the iPhone or the iTouch. What can’t these things do? Creating content, software applications and who knows what else for all kinds of mobile devices is hot. So “Mobile Application Developer” is a career that is here now and will expand in the future. This is also a career that colleges and universities are already recognizing. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute offers a degree in “Electronic Media Arts and Communication”; Worcester Polytechnic Institute offers “Interactive Media and Game Development”. Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has a BS in “New Media and Interactive Development”; Champlain College offers a degree in “Software Engineering for Emergent Technologies”.Computer Forensics and Cyber SecurityThe other really hot area highlighted at colleges like RIT is computer forensics and cyber security specialists. You only have to listen to the latest news about hackers stealing 135 million credit card numbers to see why these are hot job areas. Computer forensic specialists work with criminal justice folks to dig into all the computerized records and data associated with criminal cases. We are only going to get more connected in the future, making us even bigger targets. If you like figuring out how to get around what someone else made, why not consider putting your talents to good use for everyone’s benefit? DePaul University offers a degree in “Information Assurance and Security Engineer”; RIT has “Information Security and Forensics”, while Champlain college offers “Computer and Digital Forensics”.These careers are real, growing, and educational resources are available now! If you are a gamer, or if you know a gamer, there are cool careers to get into. The US Department of Labor predicts that IT jobs will be among the fastest growing and highest paying over the next decade. These jobs will be critical to the nation’s economy and security, and offer the highest entry level salaries with a bachelor’s degree of any out there. Check them out, and look into the schools and programs that most excite you.
These are the most efficient classes in my opinion. It all depends on your game-play so this can differ from person to person.Modern Warfare and you can always search the site for more useful information about this game.
What is Augmented Reality? (And what can it do for my business?)
Jul 5th
Augmented reality, by definition, is any view of a physical real-world environment whose elements are augmented by virtual computer-generated imagery. This is a fairly broad definition that encompasses a lot of smaller categories.
Augmented reality is a technology that is expanding very quickly, and that has expanded further than most people realize. There have been major breakthroughs in the technology, including miniaturization and development; however there are still some weaknesses and difficulties that have yet to be solved.
When most people think of augmented reality, they tend to think of super futuristic heads-up displays that can instantly provide information on any object it sees, and help direct the user’s interactions with reality, like we have seen in the Terminator or Iron Man movies.
However, mobile technologies, digital cameras, cutting edge software developers, and the power of crowd-sourced information has helped build a new generation of augmented reality applications that are pushing the limits of the technology and creating new tools for individuals and businesses to engage each other.
This has transformed augmented reality from bulky hardware setups into small apps that run on common smartphones, home computers, and Internet applications. No longer do we need bulky goggles, awkward setups, or futuristic hardware to make it work, which has opened it up to wide-scale commercial use.
What can it do?
Despite some still existing limitations, augmented reality is actually impressively powerful, especially in mobile devices. We will discuss specific limitations in a bit more detail at the end of this article, but first the good stuff: what it can do.
Augmented Reality on Mobile Devices
Many smartphones, including the Apple iPhone™ and many Android™ phones, now come with a built-in GPS system and compass, which means that the phone can determine its location and know which direction you are facing. This is important because most mobile augmented reality applications rely on knowing your position, rather than on object recognition (but there are a few of those too).
This includes providing directions, providing information on things around you, and updating you when something important happens in your area. For example, if you were in a mall, an augmented reality application could help guide you to stores that had an item you wanted, update you when flash sales and discounts happen, and help you locate your friends should one get lost.
One of the more popular applications on the Droid is Google’s™ Sky Map application. Users can hold their phone up to the night sky and instantly see a label for all the stars and constellations. As the user points the phone in different directions, the image on the screen adjusts appropriately to display labels for what the user is viewing in real life.
Other similar applications have taken this technology and applied it to searching. Augmented reality browsers work by displaying search results based on proximity. As you search for the nearest pizza restaurant or hotel, these browsers will display the results in real-time digital information on top of the real world, as seen through the camera on your mobile phone. As you hold your phone up to the horizon and spin around, the overlay will show you which results appear in whichever direction you are looking.
One of the most impressive reality browser is called Layar, which allows users and developers the ability to build custom tools. As a result, users can search for hundreds of different types of things, including nearby tweets, nature pictures, service opportunities, and community events. Layar can display 3D object overlays, such as displaying the Berlin wall as it stood before 1989, or accurately placed information icons.
Augmented Reality with Webcams and Internet Applications
Another form of augmented reality that is becoming increasingly common in mobile and web applications is the use of webcams or phone cameras to overlay images onto whatever the camera is viewing.
In many cases this uses QR codes, essentially a high-tech barcode, or other visual cues in order to know how to display an object. For example, magazines, business cards, trading cards, or other materials can be printed in order to provide visual cues to the camera. Hold the card closer to the webcam and the object gets bigger; tilt or rotate the card, and the virtual object moves along with you.
This lets you virtually manipulate objects, which can be great for online shopping, games, development, and other applications. There are hundreds of examples that are currently in use, but each of them provide a new level of interactivity that gives the user the ability to “interact” with the product, rather than just see pictures or video.
Some of these applications also recognize physical gestures, which lets you control the application just by standing in view of the camera and making the appropriate gestures. For example, some applications let you virtually try on clothing from an online store. By using simple gestures, like raising your arm to the right or left, you can move to the next article of clothing, or add the current one to your shopping cart, or change the color, or any number of programmable commands.
This gives the user full control without the need to return to the computer to make selections or work with the program.
Digital live cameras have also been employed in augmented reality billboards. These billboards record what is happening on the street below, and overlay information or advertising.
One example is in Amsterdam where a prerecorded video of EMTs and medical personnel are attacked when trying to rescue an injured person. This prerecorded (and staged) video is overlaid onto a live video of people on the street. When you look at the billboard, you see what looks like a tragic event taking place. The message is that everyone needs to be aware of public servants, and help keep them safe.
This type of impact marketing reaches audiences by showing them what a situation would look like in real life. This can be for public safety situations, as described above, or for product promotion in which the audience can visualize how a certain product might look in their own home.
Custom Augmented Reality Business Integration
Companies have also started building their own augmented reality platforms for training, efficiency, and performance improvement. These projects help new and experienced employees hone their skills, learn new techniques, and respond more quickly to real-time information.
One example is BMW which is in the process of deploying its own augmented reality application for mechanics. This application is designed to improve training time, reduce errors and increase efficiency by guiding mechanics through the repair process.
This platform, which is an integration of custom hardware and software, has mechanics use specialized goggles that employ object recognition to accurately display select car parts in their real location. Not sure how to remove the radiator? This system will show you exactly which parts you need to move and remove in order to replace it. It does this by overlaying images of each part, and gives visual instructions for removing each piece.
Augmented reality applications are already being developed in many other industries, including health care and natural resource development. The increased access to real-time information gives managers and on-the-ground people, from well drillers to brain surgeons, a leg up on the competition.
What are its limitations?
The limitations mostly depend on the platform. For most businesses seeking to develop something to engage customers, matching the desired features of the application to the right platform may be a large hurdle. We have discussed some suggestions for matching a project to the right platform before, mostly for mobile and desktop applications, and it definitely applies here as well.
Currently, most smartphones depend on GPS and an internal compass for direction and location. This works in many situations, but is limiting because of its inherent inaccuracy. The GPS can tell what street you are on, and the compass can tell generally what direction you are facing, but if you wanted to include accurate overlays on objects or buildings, it would be nearly impossible without object recognition, or other visual location cues. You could get semi-close, sure, but without more powerful object recognition software, and more powerful mobile devices to run that software, there will always be very noticeable incongruities.
Fortunately, like with most technology, it is improving quickly. In a few years, near-real-time object recognition on smart phones will be a reality. Already Google’s app “Google Goggles” employs rudimentary object recognition, which can read and translate text, recognize paintings and landmarks, read barcodes among other things, but it still has trouble recognizing and differentiating many common objects. Also, even Google Goggles has a somewhat considerable delay in processing time and using its online knowledge database to make comparisons, which prevents it from being used in a practical AR experience.
Other limitations include wide-spread social adoption of the technology. Mobile devices, webcams, and other necessary technologies are fairly common, but still not everyone uses these devices, and not all those will use augmented reality applications. For now, it is mostly a novelty. But as more people engage the technology, user experience, usability, and quality will improve, which will result in better and more engaging applications.
So what is next?
As technology progresses, expect to quickly see augmented reality become increasingly standard in web and mobile applications. As hardware and software improve, augmented reality will become more mainstream, letting people visualize any product just by scanning its barcode, or even just by pure object recognition.
Integration into mobile devices is a given, but also expect to see it integrated into our social lives and as part of our daily experience. Already game developers, marketers, advertisers, manufactures, doctors and many other industries are working to develop augmented reality applications that will give them a leg up on their competition and produce better results in less time.
As always, we are always willing to take on a challenge and would love to work with you to build a market leading augmented reality product that will impress your clients and your competition. Let us know how our experienced development team can help you succeed.
The marketing team at Amadeus Consulting considers it part of their daily tasks to stay on top of what is going on in the technology marketplace. To Be or Not To Be Free
Jun 27th
The security problem at the mobile market is becoming a serious and burning issue. And what’s sad both Apple and Google’s platforms suffer from it and smartphone users do not feel protected anymore. At last! It seems that smartphone safely is becoming a number one priority for a range of users. Unfortunately, so far they perceive it more like the thing the rival platform definitely hasn’t while their own phone enjoys a full scale protection from different types of malware threats and suspicious software.
According to the report published by security firm SMobile Systems, which is a renowned expert in mobile market security about 20 percent of the 48,000 apps in the Android marketplace allow a third-party application access to sensitive or private information. What’s more, some apps are able to make calls and send text messages without notifying their owners. Besides, the company warns that the iPhone app market is no better and no one can guarantee (not even Apple itself) that an app downloaded from the App Store does not contain malicious ware. Taking into consideration that SMobile Systems is an interested party as it provides security solutions to the smartphone market, it’s quite possible that the firm may be a bit biased in its judgments but the whole idea still holds true.
Many users, especially iPhone owners, state that the security issue is closely connected with the overall openness of the Android platform and are sure that locked platforms such as their own one are deprived of such risks. An open platform referring to the Android environment means that Android developers all over the world can get access to code and review it to make it even better. The whole problem with personal information gathering is more connected with the fact that both Apple and Google are launching advertising campaigns and the more they know about their owners’ habits and hobbies, the more relevant their advertising can be and the less it will disturb handset-holders as the latter will be likely to get interested.
Imagine, a person has downloaded an app dealing with pregnancy issues. The very time he or she has pressed the download button, the info about it is submitted and the user receives a scope of adds focusing on corresponding medical services, special fitness lessons for pregnant women and a slew of ads from stores vending staff for newborns. If you spend the biggest part of the time at the different virtual exhibitions marveling at the technology of XIV-th century ship building, you are sure to be offered the newest book on the topic as soon as it appears in the store. A promotion from the restaurant you are passing by brings a splendid idea to take a mug of beer and a bite of pizza. And don’t be surprised it’s not a lucky coincidence, your smartphone had transmitted your coordinates using the in-built GPS, before you even approached the place.
All that can be extremely funny and extremely useful, the only concern is that they can learn too much of our personal life and interests. But God help us, those virtual They already know a lot. Almost all our movements are monitored by cams in shops and streets, all our spendings and revenues are tracked following the cash flows from and to our credit cards, social networks present a nice way to assess our friends and acquaintances. So, nowadays only some African native living in the bush in the hut his grandparents built can still boast of being free. But he or she hardly thinks of it as an ultimate value.

Startup Vs. Big Company: What Happened To the Innovation? A Fun Yet Wise Look
May 26th
Of all the questions surrounding a business and how to effectively run it, “running my company like a startup” has got to be the most asked about strategic question. Why? Because nobody has given a popularily known satisfactory answer. Yeah, sure, every expert worth his flagrantly padded “CV” has to cough up all kinds of authoritatively sounding answers, preferably sprinkled with the most current biz buzzwords and concepts. But the question keeps being reasked again and again, in trade magazines and blogs and seminars and so on, precisely because all the aforementioned answers amount to nutritionless rhetoric. Until now. The secret, the key, to understanding how to run your company “like a startup” is to understand what changes occur in a company’s transition from startup to “up and running”, as related to innovation and nimbleness. In other words, when you say you want to run your company like a startup, what you mean is you’d like your now bigger company to have the inventiveness, the innovation, the maneuverability, of a company just starting out. You don’t mean you want to be eating cold pizza and sleeping on the couch in your Mom’s basement when you’re not pulling all nighter’s trying to make Mr. Client Worth $50 Profit happy on an impossible deadline. No, that’s not what you mean. So, we need to define what unique qualities a new biz has that are lost in its transition to a more successful, but bigger, lumbering business. Once you understand the difference, then you can do what it takes to incorporate that innovative streak into your company. To make this easy, let’s use an example. Say you’re just out of college, and together with a couple of buddies, you decide to launch a software company. You interned in this hospital not far from the college doing software grunt work on their information systems, partly because they paid you, but mostly because of Ashley, the cute nursing student you wanted to get to know better. While punching code, you notice their systems were inefficient and clumsy; wasted time, energy and money; and you thought, hey, I could do this much better. So now you’re a proud partner in Scalpelware, a medical information technologies and software systems company, whose tagline is “cutting out the deadweight”. You start out trying to make that medical records software that you were “working” on while using your hospital pass to self-importantly wander the hallways hoping to “accidentally” bump into Ashley. But you soon get quagmired in the gargantuan scope of the project, having to interface the records software with a veritable jungle of often arcane inputting programs and system setups, on top of the seemingly insurmountable twin goals of overpowering the entrenched dominant players in the business and convincing fickle, security – sensitive hospitals that your little college roommates and you are good enough to maintain sensitive patient records in a reliable and secure way. Honest! So you and your partners fish around. You try an iPhone applet one buddy wrote (great, but didn’t exactly ‘create waves’, what with the 23 downloads and all), you try various kinds of linking-stuff-together-ware, a quick access to paramedics program, an internal algorithm to scan the records and identify patients who need certain age or disease triggered checkups, a program to……. You get the idea. This goes on, with each idea running into its own set of challenges and problems. You finally settle on a program that optimizes and manages hospital functions to save money. You then go through all the usual start up steps and classic war-stories, from cold calling to selling off Uncle Elmer’s gold teeth to that weekend you spent in County under Suspicion of Stalking, which led to your self-vow never to pitch to hospital executives late at night on their front porch after you followed them home. A few years later finds you looking out your 42nd floor window office as CEO of the renamed MSS International (Medical Software Solutions), now a respectably sized company, facing the same economic issues with everybody else while trying to stay innovative and ‘ahead of the curve’. Then it hits you, while reading about another young startup: the memories of your earlier years, different types of software you had tried, the all nighter’s you pulled, the cold calls and connections and friends you made – and the general nimbleness and maneuverability you had. You remember this wistfully because now you don’t have any of that. You spend your days locked up in the Glass Prison, only allowed to experience Fresh Air at preordained, often supervised recreation time blocks, only in designated areas, to be whisked back to your ornate cell in the cubicle encrusted Big House for further 18 – hour stretches of Labor. And the problems you face! If only you had the old time inventiveness, you could, say figure out the Next Big Program or try something new – New! – or come up with a fun advertising idea like the one you got Ashley to star in. Granted, it was shot by Jesse, the perpetually semi-inebriated Frat Boy Partner, and it was a spur – of – the – moment “business” idea, in that it was primarily designed to get Ashley in her bikini on the beach, and get lots and lots of video. If only that idiot Jesse hadn’t forgot the damn cap on the lens for the first hour. What and idiot! Oh well. He turned out OK, now that he’s heading Asian Operations. But the point is, you could use a major dose of that startup magic, that free flowing idea and innovation set up that you had years ago. If only! So you write to …. Well, it doesn’t really matter what you do or who you write to at this point, because we get the picture. And no, I didn’t go into seemingly unnecessary details to waste your time, or because I talk too much. It is imperative that you understand and can envision the circumstance, beyond the technical bullet points, if you are ever going to comprehend the essence of the difference between a startup and established business. So, what are you to do? How can you get that innovative streak back? How did you turn into Bob, the boring paper pusher? Well, the difference falls into three categories, known as the Three R’s: reading, ritin’ and rithmatic… wait a minute…woops, those are the wrong ones. The Three R’s are: 1. The Romance, referring to our altered, romanticized view of The Startup. 2. The Responsibility, that your current position places on you, and associated constraints. 3. The Reality, which encompasses everything I couldn’t fit under the first two, connected by the fact that they’re all ‘real’, in that they’re not “fake”. Simple and logical. When you started your business, you had no clue if it would succeed or not. You had and idea you were pursuing (which eventually changed); but you didn’t know if you would succeed. You hoped, much as you hoped you’d bump into Miss Pretty Coed in Nursing Scrubs when you self importantly wandered the hospital. But there was no guarantee. So you were just trying different stuff, without too much Responsibility beyond taking out the trash and making Mom’s curfew. Once you had success, however, you switched to building on that Success and making the company bigger and more profitable based on that kernel of an idea. And when the money continued to come in, so you began to “buearocratize” the method that you used to succeed – hiring people and creating departments and mission statements and company policy’s and all kinds of corporate innards to keep repeating what you have done, so that your initial method could metasize and be perpetuated to bring in great amounts of money and power. So your position changed from inventing new solutions on the fly and having a finger in every pot, to being a narrowly constrained corporate manager, making sure a wide, predefined buearocracy remains within the bounds of its definition. This is a major difference. And from the is difference flows most of The Change. (The leader’s changing role is a critical issue, but a different subject. You can read about it in “The Changing Sands of Leadership”). The Responsibility When you were just starting out, nobody knew who you were (except maybe the local sheriff). So it didn’t make any difference if an idea failed. You could afford to put out a cheesy iPhone applet that was designed as a half-joke, complete with a few buttons that triggered a burping sound. It didn’t really matter, nor did it matter that only a handful of people actually downloaded it. But now, if you were to release a program with anything less than stellar reviews and a giant buying audience, then the doubters and the Wall Street gum – flappers will throw a fit, extrapolating all kinds of gloom and doom collapsing scenarios and causing your company actual monetary losses and consequences. This hangs a gargantuan deadweight around the neck of any serious new idea, with studies and projections and management approvals and focus groups and just a heckuva lot of hand wringing associated with any new idea. Then there is the boring but essential heavy responsibility of keeping the company humming along and all the departments doing what they’re supposed to do and all the clients happy, knowing full well that if you were to leave the helm to less capable hands, then your company could be hurt by mistakes you wouldn’t have made. People could lose their jobs, credibility with clients could be defiled, and all what you worked for over so many years could be sunk because of a Damn Rookie. This forces you to spend everyday stuck doing the creative version of an assembly line hole-puncher, traversing the same pathways day in and day out as you stay the course. The Romance Ah, the good old days of the startup, when you would slurp Ramen, invent awesome ideas, between jokes and complaints from Mom regarding the strewn about empty pizza boxes. Or at least that’s the part you remember. What people tend to forget are the hard parts: the fact that you had really no idea what you were doing, the fact that every “killer ap” you quagulated from your beverage infused stupor was accompanied by a half a dozed inconceivably boneheaded ideas, the fact that you were constantly poorer than a naked monk, losing opportunities and wasting the little money you did have due to knowing zilch, not to mention working very hard for a pittance, and so on. Furthermore, the creative aspects are exaggerated. It’s not like you plopped down on the couch after downing a keg through your nose, and started to burp out multimillion dollar corporate business plans. No, there was a lot of work involved before a useful idea come to you. You had experiences with the product and business, ran into problems and hardheaded executives and saw people’s frustrations and mistakes before you could produce a good idea. Moreover, people project on “the startup” all their supercreative fantasies of carefree, Googlesque youthful genius. It’s not like that. The guys joke around and play foosball because they don’t have many responsibilities. Which is a good thing, considering their level of maturity. Startups from Facebook to ebay to pets.com brought in real executives for just that reason: you can’t run a company like a college dorm. You actually need people who know how to do real work, and stuff. So get over the Romance and be realistic. An up and coming company of some fresh college kids doesn’t posses the Holy Grail of inventiveness, or the fountain of youthful genius in its structural DNA. And speaking of Barren, Ashley grew up into a fat, pushy, tobacco chewing nurse, who married “Buck”, the guy taking a court-ordered alcohol and drug abuse course while working towards getting his ASE patch. See? It’s not all like you thought. The Reality The reality is, in enshrining every successful aspect, action, and lesson in company policy and buearocracy, as you must do, these aspect and manners of action have become very difficult to change. The reality is that the flip side of increased specialization is decreased wide angle vision of action and its consequences, and decreased responsibility, which carries its own negativites. Specialization also tends to eliminate cross pollination; you never know what anyone else is doing, so you neither experience how your work meshes with someone else’s, nor do yu truly grasp how what you do affects them. Designing a seat cushion based on parameters without talking to the guys designing the seat, means that there will be “discomfortables” that get brushed over because its too much of a pain to send it back until you get it right. Etc., etc. The Reality is the increased buearacracy, including the layers of management meant to oversee and approve underling’s decisions , makes getting anything new done a draining ordeal, which unsurprisingly leads to people usually not trying anything new. The reality is the changing role of management is not always fully comprehended by them, as evidenced by their relentless attempts to “act like a startup”, eventually leading to the Chief Financial Officer walking around the office uncomfortably dressed like “Larry the Cable Guy”. Suffice it to say that management often has a hard time realizing that their role has changed, and is changing, and this leads to mistakes. The reality is the size of the company, the history of its success, the breadth of its market and penetration all mean that any new product, advertisement, or business angle could not only fail on its own, but more importantly stab the company in the jugular, and cause whatever current success to be negatively impacted. This means that the creative and foresight people tend to be more focused on maintaining the status quo without upset, instead of inventing The Next Big Thing. Maintaining the current success also often drains and occupies the leadership, neutering energy that can be devoted to something else. The reality is “Need is the Mother of Invention”, and success is the rich stepfather of Invention, providing little Invention with all the Comfort his heart could desire, but taking away his mother, Need, and thereby turning him, little Invention, into a spoiled, lazy-ass little brat, who never wants to get off his butt and do something inventive, because he has everything spoon fed to him. Which can be a problem. So now that I’ve deflated your hope, let me remind you of something: You’re not paying me to tell you what you want to hear; in fact, come to think of it, you’re not paying me at all. So I’m not going to tell you what you want to hear. But I will tell you the facts. And the facts on the differences in mentality between the startup and the established business are exactly as I laid them out. This doesn’t mean that there are no innovative quality’s in a startup, or that you can’t capture them. Everybody now: Yes, you can. And I’ll show you how. Just send me a thousand dollars, and a couple of dozen pictures of Ashley’s younger, good – looking sisters, so I could pick one, and you’ll be in business. Or read the next article in this series. Although, personally, I’d go with the first choice. It’s so much easier. And, hey, if I don’t like a sister, I’ll promise to send you the pictures I reject.

More Powerful and Attractive Apple iPhone 3GS-myluxphone
May 18th
The Apple iPhone 3GS is billed as a more powerful, feature-laden follow-up to the 3G, which the company says revolutionized the way people use mobile phones. The 3GS features a similar look to the current iPhone, complete with a sleek rectangular shape and a large touch screen. But the phone comes packed with new features inside, according to CNET reporter Erica Ogg, who blogged live from the event.
Ogg says the 3GS has a new camera that shoots video and zooms. A touch-screen feature also lets iPhone photographers tap the area of the photo they would like to put into focus, she says.
The new phone reportedly will have a longer battery life. iPhone 3GS will be available in the United States on June 19 and will hit 80 countries by August, Ogg says.
Perhaps the only disappointment was that Apple CEO Steve Jobs did not make an appearance on stage. There had been speculation online that the popular tech figure would make a cameo at the event. Jobs have been on medical leave since January.
Apple also discussed a new iPhone operating system, version 3.0, which adds a cut-copy-paste feature to current iPhones. Apple said the new software adds 100 new features. There will be more features of iPhone 4GS.
One of those getting the most buzz was the Find My iPhone feature, which will be available only for customers of Mobile Me, an Apple service that lets users sync e-mail and other data between computers and iPhones.
If you lose your phone, Mobile Me will display a Google Map that shows where your iPhone is, as long as it’s turned on. You can then send a message to the phone, and it will sound an alarm, alerting nearby people to save it for you. If you think you’ve lost the phone permanently, you can remotely wipe all your data; if you find your missing phone later, you can plug it into iTunes and restore all your data. New iPhone applications were also discussed. Apple has gotten widespread praise for the fact that independent developers can create programs for the iPhone. An iPhone screen protector will be necessary for you to protect your iPhone.
Apple’s phones are the second-best-selling consumer smartphones in the U.S., according to the NPD Group, an online market-research firm.
Smartphones are a category of mobile phones that act kind of like personal computers, allowing people to surf the Internet, share photos and keep up with e-mail while on the move. About a quarter of all consumer phones sold from January to April of this year were smartphones, NPD says.
